THACKLEY TRUMPIT APRIL 2014 GONE FISHIN with Idle and Thackley Angling Association

Gone Fishin...with Idle and Thackley Angling Association

Beginners Tips Canal Fishing
Canal fish are highly educated and tackle shy and therefore you must learn to fish with very small hooks and fine line than normal for most species other than pike or carp. Hook sizes should be 20 or 22 and use double strength line at .10mm or preferably less. Using sensitive floats with most of the weight tight under the float and only 3 or 4 small shot size 10 or smaller spaced 6 inch apart from the hook      ensures the bait falls slowly. Try just on and off the bottom to start with and you should always use a plummet to test the depth. Learn to land larger fish on this light tackle. If you can use a pole 4 to 6 elastic will act as a shock absorber. Try fishing just this side or the far side of the boat channel at first then further over if you cannot catch.
A simple but very effective method is bread punch. Put a few slices of bread in the blender /liquidiser until it is broken down into very fine particles. When lightly squeezed into a small ball or cupped in neat with the pole cup this groundbait attracts feeding fish into your swim. Push a bread punch into a thin slice of very fresh bread and put it on the hook for bait. If you don’t have a punch take the ballpoint part out of a Bic pen and then use the thin end of the empty case as the punch.
Other small fish hook-baits include squats and pinkies (small maggots),  maggots, castors and small worms for the perch. Feed little but often and you should soon get bites. For carp and tench and larger bream you need to fish heavier with .16mm line and 16 to 12 sized hooks and if using the pole upgrade to 12 or 14 elastic. Use larger baits such as sweetcorn, pellets and luncheon meat and a mix of hempseed / pellets is a good feed attractor. Early morning and late afternoon are usually the best times to catch the shy larger fish. Surface baits of floating bread and dog biscuits will also work well for the larger carp  especially near far bank weed beds.
For perch chopped worm as a goundbait is the best     attractor with either worm or red maggot as a hookbait. The near shelf can be a good area for perch and down the boat channel where the canal is deepest.
A good way to learn is to watch other anglers and their tactics / set up and ask them for advice and tip
